Crop Cages
We wanted to plant vegetables on the south side of the house. It made perfect sense. They’ll get great sun and it’s protected from the wind. Plus, we’d rather spend time and energy on plants that can “sing for their supper”.
We only had one problem. We don’t have a fence around that area, or any area, of our yard. What we do have are deer and rabbits. The Man of the House did some research and came up with a plan, crop cages!
So here’s the area that we cleared:
We purchased two cages and planned to have them sit side by side.
They weren’t hard to put together, but it did require a little muscle to make sure that the rods were inserted fully into the corner pieces. The nets are one piece affairs that fit over the cage like a toaster cover. One side of the cage as two zippers. You use that side as a door to go inside the cage much like you would a tent. You can also tie that side of the cage up. We do that during the day to allow bees to get that the flowering plants.
We planted two tomato plants and two pepper plants in each one.
I’ll let you know how the experiment with crop cages goes. Do they work? Do they last? Also, these haven’t been secured to the ground via earth staples. We don’t get a lot of wind, but it would be good to do just in case. We’re thinking about making our own.
