Tomato Jam in the Bread Machine
Nope, you’re not seeing things. I made tomato jam in the bread machine. We’ve got a bunch of Golden Nugget tomatoes. They’re like cherry tomatoes but they’re yellow and very tasty. The Man of The House has been saving most of them for tomato wine. But there were a few extra and I thought, “Why not?”
Tomato Jam
- 2 and 1/2 cups small tomatoes – cut them in half and mash them a little
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
Add the above to the bread pan of the Zojirushi Bread Machine and set the bread machine to the jam setting. After the jam is done allow it to cool. Then place it in a covered container in the refrigerator. The jam turned out to be a little runny so the next time I make it I’ll add some fruit pectin.
You’re wondering how it tastes aren’t you? It’s good but a little odd. It’s very sweet and yet it tastes like tomatoes. It’s hard to get your brain wrapped around it. Since that’s the case we’re experimenting with alternate uses for the jam. For example, we had it on corn bread the other day. That was VERY good. Later we’ll be using it as a glaze on roasted chicken and then as a “secret sauce” in chicken sandwiches. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Try this: A toasted slice of bread, on top some cheese, I’d recommend a strong one, and on top a little bit of tomato jam.
That does sound good! I’ll have to give that a try.
We didn’t make any tomato jam this year, but hopefully we will in 2010.
It turned out really good.
I added 1 1/2 teaspoon of jam setter at the beginning.
I grew the tomatoes and couldn’t be happier with the out come
Thanks so much for letting me know. I’m glad you liked it!
We love tomato jam in our house. Tastes great on toast which we have at breakfast with some cheese, eggs and bacon

A commenter was going to add pectin (can make pectin at home with apple)
Closest ingredients to my family’s Ohio depression, country recipe. I am trying to recreate it & this does not use cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup & ETC. like the hundreds of so-called depression/vintage tomato preserves. Tomato preserves are great tasting: sweet, hint of tomato flavor but not overpowering. THANKS
